a lot of younger marketers in my DMs asking for advice, aggregating here:
how much money should I ask for? --?
you have bills to pay, figure out how much you need to live. aside from that, you should see your early roles as accelerants for growth - both career and financial. whenever possible, trade off cash for more equity (aggressively). find a team of the smartest, hardest working ppl who will have you - you literally want to be the dumbest person at the table - and take on as much as you can.
what about work life balance? -->
work life balance in a startup is a complete myth. if you want work life balance, go work at Google! I'm not joking. startups have a short period of time to try to strike gold and you need to be grinding every day. i realize that's not a popular answer, but it's true, and the sooner you know it, the happier you'll be with your decisions. that's not to say you shouldn't take care of yourself - burnout is dangerous. but 'work life balance' is not how i would describe the vibe at a startup
what kind of founders should I work for? -->
find someone genuine, hardworking and whom you can walk through fire and run through walls with. you need to be able to be brutally honest with each other and develop trust. if you sense they can't take the heat, either the hard work or feedback, that's a red flag
the role seems like I'll wear a lot of hats... -->
that's great! and normal! if you are joining as employee 15 at a seed stage company you are going to wear a lot of hats, and you'll need to. everyone is. if you don't want to do that, go work at a later stage/larger company.
keep the DMs coming - always happy to answer questions when i can
