Some thoughts on $Troll coin, and why I think it deserves a spot in the top three, with a genuine shot at number one. What is a meme? A meme is a virus of the mind. It spreads because it spreads because it spreads. Richard Dawkins defined it as a “unit of cultural transmission,” a cultural virus that survives through imitation. Memes are born, they go viral, and then they fade. An archetype is different. Carl Jung described archetypes as universal human patterns, deep structures of thought and behaviour built into us. They are not invented, they are inherited. They endure because they are part of us. Whilst most memes fade. Archetypes endure. When a meme is also an archetype, it becomes unstoppable. $Troll is that. $Troll is the abstract representation of the canonical Trickster. From Loki in Norse myth to jesters in medieval courts, the Trickster’s role is the same across cultures and time. Mock power without fear. Break rules others follow. Reveal truth through chaos and laughter. Many societies created space for ritual disorder to remind the community of deeper truths. Even kings kept jesters close because they could say what no one else dared. Jordan Peterson has described archetypes as manifestations of instinct in image and behaviour. They resonate because they are tied to our deepest drives. That is why Trollface did not simply appear and fade. It has persisted for 17 years. It is emblematic of something so deep you already believe in it, whether conscious of it or not. What do I mean? It’s all around you: “That’s so troll” “Is this troll?” “I’m trolling” “You’re trolling” Trolling, in its purest form, is invaluable. Trolls are those who speak truth in clever ways, maintaining order through disruption and avoiding destruction by wrapping truth in humour. The word “troll” has been weaponised as an insult, but that misses the point. The troll’s role is ancient and necessary for healthy societies. Why has this not been done before? Why did past attempts not take off? The answer lies in timing. Today, $Troll is more relevant than ever. Comedy and trolling have become cultural weapons again. The political climate remains polarised. After the US election, satire, parody and trolling have surged online. There is a deep hunger in our culture for truth. It is no coincidence that comedians today are insanely popular. In times of tension, trolling heals the world. It cuts through bullshit, calls out hypocrisy and says the unsayable when it’s needed most. You should be proud to be part of the $Troll community.
