I've been speaking to a lot of consumer-focused robotics companies over the past few years and have always found the core thinking boils down to "chatGPT but on a physical device" which I find lacks creativity to create high usage and break out.
More broadly, I wonder if the fairly high consensus in robotics approaches today is a symptom of the heavy coverage/ideation robots have had in sci-fi for many years.
Because we have so many different "views" on robots and robotic companions, it is harder to think outside the box or go out of distribution and instead people coalesce around the same very specific jobs to be done (a la tidying/folding clothes), and very horizontal undefined utility (people will interact with it and it will follow them around!).
