A couple of hours ago, I was walking home after working at a random cafe for a few hours. One of my good friends, who normally lives abroad, was in town for just three hours. She called me and said she had a bottle of wine and was going to our high school friend’s house to hang out for a couple of hours before leaving for Australia. I still had things to do, so I wasn’t in the mood to go. Then, I stopped for a second and thought, “Life is short, why not?” We see each other once a year at most. I’ll never forget reading a thesis about “running the numbers” a couple of years ago, and I did the same. Mathematically, I’ll see her about 30 more times in my life, maybe even fewer. So tonight was one of those days. When you ask yourself, “How many more times?” you realize our time in this world is very limited. And many things are far scarcer than you think. This is what makes them beautiful, though: their rarity. So I went. I had a great night with them, drove my friend to the airport just earlier, and am now writing this from the airport’s parking lot. Lol I’m glad I went to see them instead of working. Life is short, and your special moments are far fewer than you think. Do the math: when you realize how scarce these moments are, you’ll see them differently. One day, it’ll all end. So make it count.
