thesis on @moonbirds ecosystem
the most important aspects of a nft project are the team, community, art/ip, and "utility". let's dive in
the team
i'm not in the business of glazing but i'm about to go krispy kreme mode and that's okay because it's the truth. i'll try to keep this section short
i could simply say i'm bullish on @spencer here but i will elaborate a bit for the sake of the argument. i have known spencer for a few years now. when i first met him he was the head of the rug radio dao and flying all over the world for fencing events. since then, he's become one of the top investors, builders, and voices in crypto. outside of people who are currently running nft projects, i can't think of a single better person than spencer to acquire a nft project and bring an ip to life
spencer and team have traded most of the important nft collections since 2021, most notably pudgy penguins where they acquired the FTX lot at a heavy discount when pudgies were trading near the lows, but many others as well. they somehow made money as a NFT fund the past few years while most people lost their shirts. they have seen the rise and fall of nft empires, know what works and what doesn't, and now are channeling all of these learnings into moonbirds
watch the recent interviews he's done to see the energy and conviction spencer is approaching this with. he's bullish on himself, his team, the ip he acquired, and the community he is now leading
i would be remiss if i only mentioned spencer in the team section. through OCG and spencer ventures they already had a strong core of traders, devs, artists, and even a manufacturing/production team in asia (merch? trading cards?). since acquiring moonbirds, they have scaled up and hired multiple zoomer interns to run the socials. birbish.
tldr; if spencer had bought arabian camels i would be a buyer. luckily he didn't. he bought moonbirds - one of the most legendary og nft collections with a super active community and tons of lore 👇
community
the moonbirds community is awesome. i think the community is split up into a few different segments:
- OGs who never left, probably round tripped to some extent, but still feverishly support the brand and the new team
- newer holders like myself (kinda, i was a minter and holder in 2021 as well) who started buying moonbirds assets when spencer acquired them and have a very different thesis from those who have held for years straight. these folks have solely experienced uponly price action and are likely the main profit takers at the moment
- and here's the unique one for moonbirds: OGs who minted because of kevin rose but were never really big nft traders or even "in" crypto for that matter. this includes VCs, founders, and generally wealthy folks from KROs web2 network. i view them kind of like ancient bitcoin whales. are they dead wallets removing supply from the market? will they one day wake up from their hibernation and dump all their birbs on the floor? or is there a world where they see their assets going up in value and want to rejoin the community? who knows but it's exciting. would be interesting to see the data on how many wallets like this there are
and the team has done a great job activating the community thus far. just this week toobins (iykyk) was getting sent around to moonbird wallets and dropping SBTs to happy holders. they know what little things to do for the community to keep everyone happy and engaged while they work in the background on larger partnerships and activations
i'm in one of the chats where 250+ holders and team members are actively discussing ideas on how to proliferate birbs and generally supporting each other. OGs, new holders, people with 1 birb, people with 20 birbs. i don't want to say early bored ape vibes because that's cliche but i can say with confidence that this community is here for the long run and primed for many legs higher
art/ip/lore
i've personally never been a huge fan of pixel art especially with pfps because it doesn't present well inside a tiny circle. it's also difficult to make memes with. luckily, moonbirds have an alternative illustrated version of every birb that is much more memeable and pfp'able
i was not a fan of KRO and proof (as an entity, many lovely humans worked there), but if they did one thing right as leaders of the moonbirds ecosystem, it was the art. they were deeply connected with many of the best artists in the space and only released the highest quality work for moonbirds. i think the animated versions of the birbs are awesome
let's talk about the other 2 collections, oddities and mythics
oddities are odd and will stay odd, as the team has stated multiple times. they may not be everyone's personal preference but the shallowest of dives into the history of oddities will make you fall in love with them. the only thing i really have to say here is that it's gremplin art. that alone makes me bullish on them as a collection. i think the team finds unique ways to incorporate them into the greater moonbirds ecosystem
mythics are amazing. they are hands down one of my favorite ~10k pfp collections in terms of art (there are less than 10k). you would be hard pressed to scroll the collection for 30 seconds and not find one you love. extremely memeable and pfp'able. spencer and the team have been very vocal about how much they love this collection. i think mythics will be a core part of the ip moving forward and would be surprised if we don't see them in some sort of animated tv show, comic or trading card game in the future
each collection has its own vibe and role to play in the ecosystem. there's something for everyone
oh and a lot of people aren't hip yet but @cluuuuuuur is the moonbirds secret weapon. renowned artist and great human being. you can expect only the best of the best when it comes to art releases from moonbirds. very excited to see what they've got cooking in this department
utility
uTiLiTy, rOaDmAp (insert spongebob meme here)
utility in nfts is generally moronic, can mean literally anything, and is usually the least important part of a project. but for today's example i will use the word utility in the sense of making money simply by holding birbs
birbs are yield bearing assets. let's talk about airdrops and free claims which were a huge boost for the pudgy ecosystem the past couple years
if you have held a moonbird, mythic or oddity since spencer acquired the project, you have received:
- towns airdrop
- opensea xp airdrop (likely to convert to token later)
- monad SBT and testnet tokens (likely to convert to token later)
and a lot of other cool stuff. there's already been >$1,000 in value airdropped from 3rd parties if you sold at the right time, etc. several future activations have already been announced and the team has said they are actively pursuing more opportunities with top notch teams in the space
as everyone here should already know, it would be a fool's errand to try to value a birb based on the airdrops it receives. 99% of the value is and always will be memetic. with that being said, i think there's a non-zero chance that we get paid back on our birbs via airdrops from other projects before moonbirds even have their own tge
oops did i say moonbirds tge? is there gonna be a token 😱 i hadn't even considered that in my bullish thesis. what a nice cherry on top that would be.
the team has NOT confirmed a token publicly but there is a bit of speculation that there could be a birbcoin in the future (hello kaito pre-tge leaderboard)
hypothetically, if there was a token, which we shouldn't be baking into our valuations at all at this point, i think it would do pretty well. allow me to explain why
spencer has participated in all the major nft token launches and airdrops: apecoin, pengu, azuki elementals, etc. he has seen what's worked and what hasn't. i believe he and his team are smart enough to figure out what went wrong with previous launches, and how to ~solve things for their own launch. hypothetically, if there was ever a $birb coin, i would guess that the OCG team is working with the right folks and setting up the tokenomics so that as many people as possible are happy and it isn't just a major dumpfest in the first week like we've seen with many tokens
putting my tinfoil hat on for a moment- @rektmando has been talking a lot about who will be the first publicly traded company to also have a token. that will clearly be a huge moment for our industry. some notes: spencer is deeply connected to the institutions of the tradfi world and just recently helped take a company public in what was an extremely successful launch with Bullish. he's also mentioned on previous podcasts and interviews that it is a great time to be a US company without a token. could there be a future birb ETF? birb DAT? birb IPO? the possibilities are endless. i'm just speculating of course, but there are very few teams in the space who could pull something like that off and OCG is one of them. the institutions are coming and the moonbirds ecosystem feels like one of the most well positioned to capitalize on it
conclusion: birbish
thanks for reading my brain dump if you got this far. can't wait for the too long didn't read happy or sad that happened replies. i tried to focus more on the fundamentals than the price action but i think you can surmise that i believe the chart will continue moving up and to the right. i definitely did not hit on every bullish aspect of moonbirds and will most likely add to this separately later on but it was fun putting some of my thoughts together on paper and sharing
*disclaimer i am a holder of moonbirds assets and am birbish
